Low FODMAP and low histamine together

This is where people get genuinely stuck, and the reason is not willpower. Stacking two elimination lists leaves very little, and a large part of the conflict turns out to be avoidable.

The problem in one paragraph

Two elimination lists compiled by different people for different reasons rarely agree, and stacking them removes the union of both. What remains can be a dozen foods. Before accepting that as necessary, it is worth knowing that most of the histamine half was never checked against the measured histamine content of the foods on it.

Two findings from that comparison change the arithmetic here.

68% of excluded foods showed no significant histamine content. Roughly two thirds of what these lists tell you to avoid was not, on measurement, a meaningful source of the thing being avoided.

Only fermented foods were excluded by all ten diets. That is the single category with unanimous agreement, and it is a small fraction of what a typical list contains.

So the true conflict between the two approaches is much narrower than the apparent one. A great deal of the overlap you are trying to navigate exists because one list padded, not because two mechanisms genuinely collided in that food.

Where they do genuinely conflict

Fermented foods are the honest core: unanimous on the histamine side and, for several of them, high FODMAP as well. Aged proteins and a handful of vegetables carry real tension. That is a much smaller and more manageable set than the union of two full lists, and it is where the effort belongs.

What is not settled here

We are not telling you which foods you personally react to, and nothing here is a dietary plan. Individual reactions are real even where the list justifying an exclusion is not well founded, and a food being low in histamine on a chromatograph does not mean it will be fine for you. What the evidence supports is scepticism about the lists, not scepticism about your experience.

The part most people skip

Both approaches were designed as time-limited investigations followed by structured reintroduction. Neither was designed to be permanent, and a restriction with no exit is a diagnosis nobody made and a nutritional risk nobody is monitoring.

The reintroduction is not the boring part after the useful part. It is the part that produces the information. Everything before it just establishes that something in a large group mattered.

What to do next

Take this to a dietitian if you possibly can, because two stacked eliminations is the scenario where doing it alone goes wrong most reliably. If you are going to start anyway, start with the unanimous category rather than the union of two lists, and write down what happens.
